What is seasonal grief to you?

I love a good prompt for writing Nynke Vos

What is seasonal grief to you? How do seasons and grief interact together? In what season of grief are you?

Well first of all, I can locate grief today in my throat, breath and head. I can feel the tears dammed up behind my eyes.

Seasonal grief to me is multiplicitious - it touches the joy and the beauty that I can behold in my ecological and personal environment, at different points in the year. The season of roses blooming touches something in me which is so joyful and yet can touch longing.

Birds mating, playing, nesting, singing all move something in me. And when they are gone, I can miss that morning song, as well as the changes in the sun that mean waking in winter months to darkness.

On another level, I plan my work seasonally. I often design a pause in the summer months and allow a natural rest and play energy, which integrates what my children and young people need. This year is different due to the ending of secondary school, a year of finances being very tricky and plans changing.

Therefore there is a mixture of joy at the spaciousness, grief for what was lost that was planned for, and some stillness and emergence that is unnameable.

On the 3rd of July, Nynke and I will be hosting our final grief conversation and exploration of the season we have been in together. For me this will be a lovely completion point for a few different elements in my life, and will allow me to name and open up to some new possibilities.

Come join us for a deep and rich conversation and circle of beingness.
